How to Not Build a Data Swamp Register Now

How to Find Unused PI Tags Without Breaking Anything

To identify potentially unused PI tags, combine event activity with a reference search across AF, analyses, PI Vision, and external systems. No recent events or no AF references does not prove a tag is unused. Treat the result as a shortlist for review, not an automatic deletion list.

Tag cleanup is worth doing. Old projects, decommissioned equipment, and server migrations leave behind points that nobody owns. But deleting the wrong point can break a calculation or report long after the cleanup is finished.

Start with candidates, not deletions

Build a PI Point inventory with tag name, server, description, point source, creation or modification context where available, and latest event timestamp. Separate suspected retired equipment from active processes where no recent event may be normal.

A stale point can still be important. Some signals update only during a batch, an alarm, or an infrequent operating condition. A flat value might also reflect a stable process rather than abandonment.

Check where each candidate is used

For every candidate, look for:

  • AF attributes that reference it directly or through templates.

  • Analyses that read from or write to the point.

  • PI Vision displays, including direct PI Point references.

  • Reports, exports, integration jobs, scripts, and other third-party uses.

  • Ownership by an operating site or engineering team.

If you cannot check a consumer, record that gap. An empty search result means no reference found in this inventory, not no reference exists.

Use a staged retirement process

Classify tags as confirmed active, likely obsolete, or uncertain. Ask owners to review the uncertain cases and identify any regulated or historical retention needs. Preserve configuration and historical-data requirements before approving changes.

Run a controlled retirement with testing and a recovery approach. Recheck displays and analyses afterward, particularly when a point is used in a template or a shared calculation.

Osprey can help prioritize this work by linking discovered tag references to AF, PI Vision, and calculations. That narrows the manual investigation, but it should complement the team's retirement approval process.

Frequently asked questions

Is a PI tag unused if it hasn't updated for six months?

Not necessarily. Some event-driven, seasonal, and standby assets update infrequently.

Can I delete any PI Point not used in AF?

No. It may be consumed directly in PI Vision or by external systems.

What is an orphaned PI tag?

Teams often use that term for a point with no known owner or reference. Confirm the definition and search scope before treating it as safe to remove.
